life through the lens of choice and perception

i just finished reading "the midnight library" by Matt Haig. i was fascinated by the concept of how the main character Nora Seed views her life through the constraints of missed opportunity and forgotten talents - each one being a regret she has yet to grieve.

like many young people around my age, ive been going through similar worries about my own life. the question of what to do and who to become is an ever evolving thought with tends to change nature every other month with varying importance and shame.

i still do not know what such a path should look like, but ive gained a new perspective thanks to this book. instead of mourning opportunities that pass, view each possible decision as a path to a better or different life, even if its a small change or action.

our lives are made up by choices, not failures. such "failures" may be the result of choice, but choice carries a neutrality to it that failures does not. choice also better encapsulates the past, present, and future more appropriately. despite our past choices, there are always more choice to make.

no matter our age, there is a path to a better present in the future. there is a path which fulfills. there is a path which causes much pain. and there is a path of least resistance. we must choose our poison. no path is without difficulty. we simply choose which form that comes in, whether that is regret or another form.

from now on, i will be adopting this worldview. my circumstances are the amalgamation of my choices. i have agency. i have no regret.
